On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at 8:32 am, firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs from the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District, Encinitas Fire Department, Escondido Fire Department, San Marcos Fire Department, and American Medical Response responded to the report of a traffic collision at the intersection of Elfin Forest Road and Harmony Grove Road in Elfin Forest. When they arrived on scene, firefighters found one SUV that had turned on its side and was then hit by another SUV. Seven teenagers were in the first SUV and a woman and two children were in the second SUV. All were able to self-extricate from the vehicles and were transported to area hospitals via ambulance with injuries ranging from moderate to critical. The roadway was shut down in both directions while crews worked to rescue the patients and clear the scene. California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
