On Tuesday, October 9, 2018, firefighters from Rancho Santa Fe, Cal Fire, San Diego, and Encinitas responded to the report of a vegetation fire near Artesian Road and Rio Vista Road in Rancho Santa Fe. Upon arrival, they discovered a fire burning in a field of dry grasses and quickly went to work to extinguish it. A helicopter and hand crew from the Forest Service was also called to assist. After about 30 min forward progress on the 2-acre fire was stopped and mop up operations began. Crews will remain on scene for several more hours to ensure there are no flare ups. No injuries were reported and no homes were damaged. The fire was caused by a riding lawnmower striking a rock while clearly brush. The Fire District would like to remind everyone that brush clearance is important, but it is best to do it in the morning when it is cooler and there is more moisture in the air.
