Remembering When
- Fire & Fall Prevention for Older Adults
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statistics show that
people age 65 and older are twice as likely to die in a home FIRE
as the population at large.
Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
(CDC) show that FALLS are the leading cause of death from unintentional
injury in the home.
Remembering When, developed by the NFPA and CDC, is designed to
prevent fire and fall injuries among older adults and help them
live safely at home for as long as possible. Throughout the course
of the presentation, nostalgia cards are used to quiz the audience,
focusing on 16 key messages.
Fire Prevention Messages
1. Provide smokers with large, deep ashtrays.
2. Give space heaters space.
3. Be kitchen wise.
4. Stop, drop and roll.
5. Smoke alarms save lives.
6. Plan and practice your escape from fire.
7. Know your local emergency number.
8. Plan your escape around your abilities.
Fall Prevention Messages

coordination.
2. Take your time. Being rushed or distracted increases your chance
of falling.
3. Clear the way. Keep stairs and walking areas free of clutter.
4. Look out for yourself; see an eye specialist once a year.
5. Slippery when wet. Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower
floors.
6. Throw rugs can throw you.
7. Tread carefully.
8. Best foot forward. Wear sturdy, well-fitting shoes with non-slip
soles.

in duration and are open to all community groups within the District.
Presentations can be hosted at the Fire District Headquarters, senior
centers or in private homes.
