Lesson Plans (pdf)
Matches and Lighters Are Tools, Not Toys
This lesson discusses the difference between tools that adults use
and toys that children play with. Large-scale matches and lighter
props are used to emphasize the importance of keeping "hands
off" and telling an adult when dangerous tools like these are
found lying around.
Stop, Drop and Roll
The stop, drop and roll lesson explains how fire can easily burn
skin, and how to extinguish a fire if it's on skin or clothing.
Students are asked to volunteer to help with the lesson and demonstrate
the proper stop, drop and roll technique.
Firefighters Are Our Friends
As a "refresher," much like the preschool program, this
lesson explores the different clothing and equipment firefighters
must wear during a fire. Firefighters demonstrate and explain how
their gear may look (and often sound) a little scary, but underneath
the clothes, it's just a friendly firefighter ready to help in an
emergency. Students are told never to hide during a fire, they should
always find the safest way outside to their family meeting place.
